Cinnabon Japan finds two new ways to mix its own dessert traditions with Japan’s.
Unlike some other American sweets suppliers who’ve set up shop in Japan, Cinnabon doesn’t have Japan-exclusive menu items all that often. We can probably chalk that up to the chain’s key ingredient, cinnamon, being a distinct flavor that doesn’t feature very often at all in traditional Japanese desserts. Leave the cinnamon in, and it’s hard to find a cordial combo with Japanese ingredients, but take it out, and it’s not really a cinnamon bun anymore, is it?
But every now and again Cinnabon Japan does find a way to create new desserts with Japanese inspirations, and it’s got two on its menu right now.

Collectively called the Wagokorobon line (wagokoro meaning “Japanese heart”), the first of the two items is the Kuri (Chestnut) Matcha Mini Chocobon. This starts as one of Cinnabon’s cinnamon-light Chocobons, which get chocolate kneaded into the standard Cinnabon dough plus a drizzle of chocolate sauce. This Wagokorobon version also gets a chestnut frosting, representing one of Japan’s favorite fall dessert flavors, plus a whole lot of matcha sprinkled on top. There’s so much green tea that it looks like it’ll definitely impart a noticeable texture, but that powdery sensation shouldn’t be too far off from the sprinkled cinnamon on conventional cinnamon buns.

Meanwhile, there’s a different granular guest star on the Kuromitsu Kinako Minibon: kinako, or roasted soybean powder. While not as sweet as the sweet red bean paste called anko that often shows up in Japanese confectioneries, kinako is noticeably sweet and fragrant, with a slight nutty quality to its flavor. Kinako’s texture is fine enough that it can make the things it’s sprinkled on feel a little dry, though, so it’s often accompanied by kuromitsu, a kind of Japanese brown sugar molasses, as it is here, and the mix of sweet, sticky, powdery sensations should slot very nicely into what you’d want from a cinnamon bun while still having an unmistakably Japanese taste.

Both Wagokorobon items are on sale at Cinnabon Japan branches now, and are scheduled to be available until late November.
