Enjoy the taste of freshly whisked matcha at the touch of a button.
Japan is home to many different types of vending machines, and some of the most impressive are the ones that serve freshly ground coffee, with the beans ground and each cup brewed to order inside the machine. The process is even shown live on a monitor, so customers can watch their coffee being prepared.
Now, Toyo Vending, the company behind the popular Mill-Ground Coffee vending machines, has teamed up with tea giant Ito En to bring this technology to powdered green tea. The result is “Japan Quality Matcha”, a new style of drink that uses carefully selected matcha ingredients and specialised preparation technology to deliver an authentic taste similar to freshly whisked matcha, with five different strengths to choose from.
The new machines aim to cater to the growing demand for matcha, making it even more accessible and convenient, particularly for overseas visitors. Unlike regular drink vending machines, which are filled with bottles and cans, these ones prepare drinks to order, with the process beginning only after the customer presses the button. The company says its technology produces a taste similar to freshly whisked matcha, while also allowing customers to choose how strong they want their drink.
The machines are easy to spot, with three different all-green designs, each of which takes its inspiration from Japanese scenery and traditional culture. The first design features a deep green colour inspired by Japanese landscapes, designed to evoke a sense of tranquillity and relaxation.

The second features traditional Japanese patterns, while the third, described as “Modern Luxury”, combines a large display screen with an image of matcha against a premium tea plantation. The machines are set to be located at high-traffic locations like expressway rest areas, train stations, airports, commercial facilities, and tourist destinations popular with international visitors.
These machines are an exciting new way to enjoy matcha, and are already beginning to generate a lot of buzz in Japan. Their uniqueness has been summed up by Toyo Vending CEO Yoshimasa Wakamatsu, who has this message for matcha fans.
“We have always been committed to providing an uncompromising cup of coffee through our Mill-Ground Coffee machines, and now we’ve applied that same technology to matcha, one of Japan’s traditional treasures. We’re delighted to have found such an excellent partner in Ito En and to be able to deliver authentic Japan Quality to customers both in Japan and overseas. Through the familiarity of vending machines, we hope to offer a new way to experience matcha.”
We certainly can’t wait to try the new matcha, and all five different strengths that allow you to select your preferred intensity, when they begin appearing around Japan this month. With a variety of options to choose from, including regular matcha and matcha lattes, these look set to become the next hot trend to flood your socials, so keep an eye out for them during your travels.
