English-friendly animal cafe opening its second branch, giving away free tickets.
Company slogans can sometimes be vague, nebulous things. Sure, Apple’s “Think different” and Google’s “Don’t be evil” sound nice, but they really don’t give you a very clear picture of what those organizations do.
That same criticism can’t be made of the managers of Mipig Cafe, though, since they tell you exactly what to expect with their slogan: “With pig.” A niche within a niche, Mipig Cafe takes the concept of Japan’s cat cafes and applies it to pigs!
After opening its first branch in Tokyo’s Meguro neighborhood last spring, Mipig Cafe is expanding to a second cafe, this time in a more centralized location that should be easier for travelers and tourists to the capital to access. Next month, the doors of Mipig Cafe Harajuku will open, on a backstreet nestled between the countless clothing shops of Omotesando and Takeshita-dori.

Mipig Cafe refers to its four-legged staff as “mini pigs,” with each weighing less than 40 kilograms (88 pounds) and having a compact frame, like this little fella we met on our visit to the Meguro branch.
As is the norm for Japan’s animal cafes, each guest pays a fee depending on how long they stay, with Mipig charging 1,000 yen (US$9.25) per 30 minutes. You’re also requested to order at least one drink from the menu, and for an additional fee you can also purchase snacks for the animals to help make you the life of the porcine party.
Reservations are required (and can be made in English here, or here for VIP rooms), although the cafe is also running a special promotion to celebrate its grand opening in which it’s giving away a total of 25 free tickets to randomly selected entrants who follow the cafe’s Instagram account and leave a comment (comments in English are OK!).
