Forcefully given, unsolicited gifts aren’t usually what anyone wants in a public bathroom, but this was an exception.
On Tuesday morning, Japanese Twitter user @shino_akagami felt his stomach telling him a pit stop was going to be necessary, and so he headed to a bathroom in the train station he was passing through on his morning commute. However, this being rush hour, there were plenty of other people who were feeling the call of nature, and so there was a line.
Eventually, though, @shino_akagami got up to the front of the line, but while he was waiting for an open stall, he felt a tap on his shoulder. Turning around, he saw a man with an expression “like a demon,” and that’s when things got really weird.
The man wasn’t angry, just in a huge pinch because he really, really needed to get to a toilet as soon as possible. “Ca- can I go ahead of you?” the man asked, and before @shino_akagami could make any kind of response, the man pressed 1,000-yen (US$9.25) bill into @shino_akagami’s palm and moved past him, dashing into the stall that was just then opening up, even as @shino_akagami tried to tell him he’d be willing to let him go ahead even without the monetary compensation.

Still, the transaction was complete and @shino_akagami and the man didn’t cross paths again on their way out of the restroom after doing their respective business. So @shino_akagami had an extra 1,000 yen and a story to tell, which prompted responses on Twitter such as:
“1,000 yen is a cheap price to prevent such an unsightly stain on your pride.”
“A real-world example of ‘time is money.’”
“Can totally understand what that guy did. If I’d had to go that bad, and I didn’t have any 1,000-yen bills, I’d have busted out a 5,000 or 10,000.”
“Smart guy! If he’d just cut in line, people would have been angry at him, but this way he can smooth things over.”
“So did he make it on time?”
As mentioned above, @shino_akagami and the man didn’t see each other again after he went into the stall. However, it looks like paying for quicker bathroom access turned out to be a worthwhile investment, as one of the replies to @shino_akagami’s tweet comes from someone claiming to have been the man who gave him the 1,000 yen.

So in the end, all the poo ended up in the toiler, and the 1,000 yen ended up in @shino_akagami’s wallet, a worthy reward for being kind and considerate and preventing a potential poop disaster.
