The first day of Summer Comiket was a hot one.
After a wet start to the season, summer is finally here in full swing, bringing with it ice-cold Frappuccinos, Pokémon T-shirts, and migratory otaku, who descended upon Tokyo Big Sight yesterday for Comiket, Japan’s largest biannual indie manga, anime, game, and cosplay convention.
One of the highlights of the convention is the chance to see some awesome cosplayers, who brave the extreme temperatures in both winter and summer to strike a pose as their favourite character from the world of anime and video games.
For this year’s Summer Comiket, also known as C96, there’s a new mode of entry, with attendees now being charged 500 yen (US$4.73) per day for admission to the four-day event. While admission used to be free, the new pay-to-enter system is designed to help manage the large crowds of people who attend the event, and streamline the notoriously long queues.
▼ Buy your ticket in advance or at the venue on the day before entering.
We braved the summer heat and humidity to attend day one of the convention, and when we arrived we were surprised to see there weren’t as many people at the venue as there have been in previous years. The number of cosplayers was lower than usual too, but what they lacked in quantity they definitely made up for in quality, as these cosplayers had some extremely impressive costumes to show us.
So let’s get right to it and check out some of the best cosplayers from the first day of this year’s Summer Comiket. If you like their work, feel free to check out more of their photos online, as we’ve included links to their Twitter accounts below!
