Speech bubbles and pops of bright colour add a new comic twist to movies like My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away.
If you’re looking for official Ghibli merchandise in Japan, the Donguri Kyowakoku (“Acorn Republic”) retail chain has you covered. This is where you’ll find items like a remote-controlled catbus, Baby-G watches adorned with Kiki and Jiji from Kiki’s Delivery Service, and even lucky bags filled with secret Ghibli goods at the beginning of the new year.
Now the retail chain is bringing out a new range of items to satisfy our thirst for all things Ghibli, with a collection of glasses featuring some of our favourite characters from some of the acclaimed animation studio’s most beloved films.
Called the Vintage Glass collection, the new lineup takes classic Ghibli movie scenes and gives them an American comic look, with pops of bright colour and large, vibrant speech bubbles.
▼ The six-piece range features well-known characters like Dola from Laputa: Castle in the Sky…
▼ Porco Rosso, the flying pig from Porco Rosso…
▼ Totoro, Satsuki and Mei from My Neighbour Totoro
▼ Kiki and Tombo from Kiki’s Delivery Service…

▼ Seiji and Shizuku from Whisper of the Heart…
▼ And Yubaba from Spirited Away.
Each 245-millilitre (8.3-ounce) glass tumbler measures 11 centimetres (4.3 inches) in height, and comes with its very own box. The packaging pays homage to American comic-book style illustration, with even the Ghibli logo in the top right corner of each box stylised to look like something out of an American comic.
The Ghibli Vintage Glasses will retail for 950 yen each, plus tax, and be available at Donguri Kyowakoku stores around Japan from the end of May.
