Is this closer to Captain America-style justice, or Hulk-style smashing?
Fans have been waiting over a year since the release of Avengers: Infinity War (and its anime-trailer version too!) for the release of the recent Avengers: Endgame. The film is the culmination of over a decade of plots, characters, and arcs in one final battle.
So naturally, there are some pretty heavy spoilers in it.
And while the vast majority of the fan community has been tight-lipped about what the ending is, with the hashtag #DontSpoilTheEndgame serving as a social media reminder, one Hong Kong man recently decided to throw caution to the wind and spoil the ending outside of a theater.
The event occurred in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay, a heavily populated part of the city (that also has a great cat cafe). The man in question saw Avengers: Endgame for himself, then afterward stepped out of the theater and shouted spoilers in a loud voice while there was a crowd waiting to see the film. Many in the crowd were upset, and several came over to the man, hitting him.

According to local sources, he was hit hard and bleeding.
On the one hand, some might think that he deserved it, shouting spoilers to a group of excited movie-goers. But on the other hand, we don’t know the details of the incident, and whether it was actually malicious intent or if he was just simply excited and made a mistake.
Here’s what Japanese netizens said:

“I understand how they felt, but you can’t just hit people over stuff like that.”
“I would’ve done the same.”
“Man, after all the staff and actors did their best to try and prevent spoilers. That sucks.”
“Talk about not valuing your life.”
“He’s just lucky he wasn’t killed, I guess.”
“Well if nothing else, this incident will stop anyone else from spoiling.”
“Anyone who spoils things are pure evil. They should be erased.”
Spoilers are definitely a tricky situation. On the one hand, they’re different from slander or verbal abuse, but on the other hand they can have a tangible effect on someone’s enjoyment of media, or in some rare cases, their mental health. Certainly punching and bleeding is too much, but should there be repercussions for people like this who spoil endings for others?
Perhaps we could all discuss it over a nice can of Japanese Avengers: Endgame coke.
