A digital hanami experience like no other.
When the sakura begin to bloom in Japan we just can’t get enough of them, but their short blossoming period means there’s only a small window of time to enjoy them during full bloom or as they fall in a flurry of pink petals.
And when the weather isn’t perfect, or work gets in the way, there’s even less time for hanami flower-viewing. In recent years, though, digital artists have been coming to the rescue, with magical interactive displays that allow more people to enjoy a sakura wonderland after work, and for a longer period too.
This year, Tokyo Tower will be transformed into a pink sakura world, with a special nighttime projection mapping display called Tokyo Tower City Light Fantasia – Yozakura Night.
As the title suggests, the light installation will feature “yozakura“, or “nighttime sakura“, with gorgeous pink blossoms set against a dark, night-sky background. Ten different varieties of sakura will appear on the display, projected onto the floor and windows of the east and north-facing areas on the second floor of the tower’s main deck.

Created by digital mapping specialists NAKED, this light show is both gorgeous to look at, and fun to play with too, as visitors will be able to interact with the work by waving their hand in front of the display. This will cause the blossoms to fall, creating a magical scene as the digital petals float across the real-world view of the city through the window.
The Tokyo Tower City Light Fantasia – Yozakura Night runs from 22 March to 6 May, and can be enjoyed at no extra charge to regular admission. And while you’re at Tokyo Tower, you might want to check out the new Top Deck area, which reopened to the public after refurbishment last year.
