Did you know that Gundam can repel Godzilla’s heat ray? We sure didn’t.
November 2018 marks two big movie releases in Japan – Godzilla: The Planet Eater (released November 9) and Mobile Suit Gundam NT (November 30). Japan couldn’t pass up the opportunity to commemorate the timing of these releases, so the franchise’s respective corporate handlers, Toho and Sotsu, decided to make them do battle with each other in this 30-second advertisement.
Fans got a preview of this collaboration back in October when this illustration by Hidetaka Tenjin (a mechanical artist who’s worked on several of the recent Macross series) was released.
▼ Look at that detail!
The video doesn’t feature any direct hits from either party, so it’s up to the viewer to decide whether the two science fiction forces are in direct combat with each other, but the video does a pretty good job of convincing us they7re going at it. The ad opens with an image of the gold Unicorn Gundam, and then we see another marque mobile suit, the Narrative Gundam, fire some shots at Godzilla.
▼ He shoots, and he scores!
Godzilla returns the attack with his heat ray. Lucky for Gundam fans, the mobile suits have the convenient ability to repel this awesome power.

▼ Godzilla is ready to destroy…something.
Godzilla: The Planet Eater is the final part of a three-part animated series. Set 20,000 years in the future, this conclusion tells the story of Toho Animation’s three-headed monster King Ghidorah struggling to take back control over Earth from Godzilla. Mobile Suit Gundam NT is the latest in Gundam’s Universal Century Saga, set after the end of the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series.
While the timing of their releases seems to be the only thing in common about these two science fiction epics, we’re sure that fans aren’t complaining. Who do you think would win the battle?
